‘It is like North Pole meeting the South Pole’, this is what the ex chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir Late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed told about the PDP-BJP alliance who formed the government in Jammu and Kashmir in 2015. No one got majority in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly in 2015. PDP got 28 seats and BJP got 25 seats in the 89 member house. The two big parties decided to come together and form the government. All were eager to see a government which will be run a by a strong nationalist party and soft separatist party. Unfortunately the 3.5 years of PDP-BJP rule was miserable. In last 3.5 years, 109 civilians and 211 soldiers were killed. The opposite stand of PDP and BJP on terrorists due to their political survival were not taking the government anywhere. Famous journalist Shujaat Bukhari was killed in broad daylight. People were scared to come out of their houses. People took sign of relief once the alliance finally broke on 19th June 2018 and Governor’s rule was imposed. It is worth noting that Jammu & Kashmir has a separate constitution and Governor’s rule is imposed for initial 6 months and then if required President’s rule can be imposed.

Am being told we will now have a ‘muscular nationalist’ policy to Kashmir. But in the last 2 years we have lost more soldiers, killed more terrorists and lost more civilians than preceding period so is even more violence ‘muscular’? And when did ‘muscle’ last resolve a conflict?

Whispers abound in Kashmir about a split in the PDP in a few months and a reunion of one faction with the BJP. Two names doing the rounds for possible CM. Personally think anything cobbled and built like that – while legitimate politics elsewhere- very bad for a Wounded Valley

Why did BJP break the alliance?

In a surprise move, Ram Madhav, the general secretary of BJP announced in a press conference on 19th June that BJP is withdrawing it’s support from the PDP led government. With so many killings and attacks by terrorists, the situation was almost out of control. In the last year’s by-election of Srinagar where Farooq Abdullah won, only 7% people voted. This was the lowest voter turn out in the history of Jammu and Kashmir. With this, anyone can imagine the law and order condition of the state. This already impacted the image of BJP and they want to avoid further damage.

What will this mean for 2019?

Many believes that BJP will use Kashmir issue to win 2019 election. They already indicated that they would be very tough against the terrorists. We might see army getting more power in coming days. There might be more combing operations against the terrorists. BJP would like to show the rest of India especially the North how nationalist they are. We already saw them releasing the videos of surgical strike in Pakistan. However, BJP has less than a year to turn around the situation in Kashmir.

Whole world is watching the Kashmir situation. If the BJP government in centre can’t improve the situation in Kashmir, it has to answer a lot to the people in India in 2019 general election.
